There is a wide gap between a mood board and a finished room, and it is where most interior projects go wrong. Clients approve a set of images they like, work begins, and the result is technically what was agreed but not at all what was pictured. Two documents close that gap: a 3D visual, which shows you what the room will look like, and a shop drawing, which tells the workshop what to build. They do different jobs, and confusing them is expensive.
What a 3D visual actually settles
A photorealistic render is not decoration for a proposal. It resolves the decisions that are genuinely hard to imagine:
- Proportion — whether the panelling rhythm suits the wall's real height, and whether that island is generous or overbearing in the actual room.
- Tonal balance — how much dark timber a space can carry before it closes in.
- Light — where daylight lands at different times of day, and what the room becomes once the evening layers take over.
- Sightlines — what you see standing in the doorway, which is how the room is actually experienced.
Most importantly, it turns vague feedback into specific feedback. "I'm not sure about it" becomes "the wall units feel too heavy on that side" — a comment that can be acted on.
What it will not tell you
A render is a prediction, not a photograph, and it is worth knowing its limits. Screen colour is unreliable: brightness, calibration, and ambient light all shift it, which is why a physical sample under the room's own lighting still decides every final finish. Texture reads flatter on screen than in the hand, particularly on stone and open-grain timber. And a render says nothing about acoustics or how a space feels to move through.
Treat it as the tool that settles form, proportion, and composition — then confirm materials in the real world.
From render to shop drawing
This is the step clients see least and that determines the result most. A 3D visual shows intent; a shop drawing carries instruction. It is the document a joiner actually works from, and it specifies what no render contains: exact dimensions, material thicknesses, joint types, hardware, edge profiles, tolerances, and how each piece is fixed and serviced.
A room can be rendered beautifully and still be built badly if the drawings behind it are thin. Conversely, a modest visual backed by rigorous drawings will be built accurately every time. When you compare proposals, ask what drawings are included — it tells you more about the outcome than the renders do.
Why one team for design and build lowers the risk
When a designer hands drawings to a separate contractor, every ambiguity becomes a negotiation on site, usually resolved in favour of whatever is quickest. Details get simplified, alignments drift, and the finished room quietly diverges from the visual that was approved.
When the team that draws the detail also builds it, the drawing is written for a workshop that has to honour it. Questions get resolved before fabrication rather than during installation, and there is no gap between parties to hide in. That is the practical reason design-and-build tends to land closer to the render.
What to ask for at each stage
- Concept — plan options and a clear description of the intent, before anything is rendered.
- Visualisation — key views at eye level from where you actually enter, plus one evening-lighting view.
- Materials — physical samples of every finish, reviewed in the room under its own light.
- Technical — elevations for every wall carrying joinery, plus sections through anything built-in.
- Before fabrication — a written schedule of finishes and hardware, signed off. This is the document that prevents surprises.
The render sells the idea. The shop drawing is what gets built.
